Theoretical Investigation of the Potentiality of a Conceptual Blending View Focusing on an Analysis of the Concept of Wave-Particle Duality

The framework of conceptual blending was suggested as an alternative view of conceptual metaphor and analogy and has become influential in various fields. However, only a few studies have investigated the possibility of using the framework in the context of science education. This study applied the framework to an analysis of the concept of wave-particle duality so as to investigate the possible merit of the framework in comparison to typical view of analogy and metaphor. For the purpose, we first briefly introduce the conceptual blending view; thus, we discuss the difference between this view and the typical view of metaphor and analogy. Then, we argue that the wave-particle duality concept is better understood in the view of conceptual blending than it is in the typical view of analogy. This results suggest that the potentiality of the conceptual blending view should be investigated as a complement to the typical view of analogy and metaphor.
