In this work, we designed a two-dimensional microring resonator and numerically studied the formation of the hexagonal whispering gallery modes (WGMs) caused by the air nano rectangles in the microring resonator. The finite element method with COMSOL multiphysics software was used for the numerical simulation. Perturbation of the WGM resonances was found generally to depend on the size and the position of the nano-rectangles. We investigated the best conditions for the formation of hexagonal WGMs by varying the length and angular position of the air nanorectangles. We found that the formation of hexagonal WGMs depended strongly on the length but only weakly on the angular position of the air nanorectangles. Detailed explanations for our simulation results are given.
