Technologies for reducing power consumption have become more important as the application area of displays continues to expand rapidly. Reflective polarizers play an important role in increasing the luminance of backlights for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which are in the mainstream among various display technologies. The correlation between the efficiency of a multi-layer-type reflective polarizer and the reflecting property of a reflection film is studied by investigating the dependence of the luminance gain on the reflecting property of the reflection films adopted in the 15-inch backlight for notebook applications. Especially, the luminance gains caused by the reflective polarizer on either diffusing reflection films or specular reflection films were measured and compared, and showed that diffusing reflection is more favorable for enhancing the luminance gain of backlights. The present result suggests that the polarization recycling process occurs more efficiently as the reflection property of the reflection film becomes more diffusive.
