Changes in the Concept of Mechanical Energy of 9th Graders through Pendulum Motion Video Analyse

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the concepts related to mechanical energy held by middle-school 3rd-year students and to investigate the change in the concept of mechanical energy conversion and conservation in an activity involving an analysis of video of the pendulum motion. Thus, analysis activity was conducted with 111 9th-grade students in Cheongju. The 1. student’s concepts of potential energy and kinetic energy were classified, and the changes in the concept of mechanical energy conversion and conservation after analyzing the video of the pendulum motion were investigated. The results showed that, first of all, the concept of kinetic energy was more inappropriate than the concept of potential energy that the students had before the activity. After the video analysis activity, the students' energy concept showed a positive change. Furthermore, the students responded that they were affected by the change in the concept of mechanical energy through the image analysis activity. Through this, we can conclude that the video analysis activity contributes to an understanding of mechanical energy based on the dynamic properties of an object.
