Newton’s Scientific Problem Finding and Abductive Reasoning in his Discovery of the Light and Color Theory

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how Newton found a scientific problem and how abductive reasoning was used in his idea development about the light and color theory. We found that Newton’s problem finding in his light and color theory came from a critical analysis of the contemporary theory of light and color based on his relevant knowledge of the physics of light and color and that he formulated a new hypothesis by abductive reasoning through experimental verification. His pattern of his thought process may be used as an effective model for teaching creativity to students.

본 연구에서는 빛과 색에 관한 이론 형성과정에서 뉴턴이 어떻게 과학적 문제를 발견하였으며, 문제를 해결하기 위한 과학적 가설을 형성하는 과정에서 어떻게 귀추적 사고를 했는지 그 패턴을 분석하였다. 뉴턴은 당시의 이론을 정확히 파악하고 비판적으로 분석하여 당시의 이론으로는 설명하지 못하는 과학적 문제를 발견하였으며, 새로운 가설을 형성함에 있어 실험을 통한 검증으로부터 추론하는 단계적 귀추과정을 거쳤다. 이러한 뉴턴의 사고 과정의 패턴은 학생들의 창의성 지도에 효과적인 모형으로 활용될 수 있다.
