Abductive Reasoning and Creativity in Physics and Physics Education

Abstract

In this article, the meaning of abduction and abductive reasoning in scientific development is introduced in the view of the philosophy of science. Then, examples of abductive reasoning shown by creative physicists during the history of science are categorized as prototypic, problem finding after an abduction, successful successive abductions, interactive abduction between two concepts patterns, and additional examples of each category are given. Lastly, ways in which the examples of physicists’ creative problem finding and abductive reasoning can be applied for teachers to develop student creativity development are discussed.
