Luminescence Properties of KYF$_4$:Eu$^{3+}$ Crystals

The luminescence properties of KYF$_4$:Eu$^{3+}$ crystals were investigated by using site-selective laser-excitation spectroscopy at 20 K. The crystals were grown by using the hydrothermal method. The Five Eu$^{3+}$ centers were identified in the  $^{7}$F$_0$ → $^{5}$D$_0$ excitation spectrum. Five different emission spectra were obtained under excitation at each excitation line. The splittings of $^{7}$F$_1$ multiplets confirmed that two different types of Eu$^{3+}$ sites, existed one group corresponding to Eu$^{3+}$ ions at isolated sites and the other group corresponding to Eu$^{3+}$ ions at the chain in the KYF$_4$ crystal. The Eu$^{3+}$ ions with the highest $^{5}$D$_0$ level were found to give rise to energy transfer to other ions in the chain.
