Dependence of a Nd:YAG Laser's Output Characteristics on the Pump Diode's Characteristics

Abstract

The effective absorption coefficient of the pump diode, the absorption efficiency, and the laser output were calculated as functions of both the diode bandwidth and the length of the Nd:YAG. A temperature-dependent stimulated-emission cross section was considered in the laser-output calculation. When the diode bandwidth were broadened from 2 nm to 10 nm, the variation of the absorption efficiency with temperature decreased. Even when the bandwidth was 2 nm, the range of variation was smaller, and the absorption efficiency was higher than 75% when the length of the gain medium was increased from 1 mm to 20 mm.  We verified that the variation in the laser's output power could be decreased by increasing the diode-laser's bandwidth or the gain medium's length.

다이오드의 온도변화에 의한 파장의 이동이 이득매질의 유효흡수계수와 흡수효율, 레이저출력 등에 미치는 영향을 다이오드 선폭과 이득매질의 길이를 변화시키며 살펴보았다. 유도방출단면적의 온도 의존성도 레이저 출력의 계산에서 고려하였다. 다이오드의 스펙트럼 선폭이 2 nm에서 10 nm으로 넓어지면서 온도에 따른 이득매질의 유효흡수계수 변동 폭이 줄어들었다. 선폭이 2 nm으로 좁은 경우에도 이득매질의 길이가 1 mm에서 20 mm로 증가하면 온도의 변화에도 불구하고 75% 이상의 흡수효율을 유지하였다. 다이오드 선폭을 증가시키거나 이득매질의 길이를 증가시키면 온도에 따른 레이저 출력의 변동은 감소하였다.
