Optical Design of a Curved-Type LED Source Device Using a Plastic Optical Fiber for Improving the Light Efficiency

Abstract

We designed a light source device that combines a plastic optical fiber (POF) with a light-emitting diode (LED) source in the form of patterns on a cladding surrounding the outer surface of a light guide plate (LGP) so that a pattern processed on the POF could emit as one pixel. In order to analyze the distribution of the power emitted from the light source inside the POF, we installed 28 detectors and performed computer simulations. Consequently, 26797.9 Lux of light was transmitted to the end through three bent paths; thus, the designed system can be used as a light source device. In addition, the Curved-type LED source device using the POF emitted more uniform light compared to the conventional inserted LEDs or LEDs arranged only along one side. In order to improve the light efficiency, we confirmed that the desired illuminance distribution could be obtained by reducing the pattern close to the light source and adjusting the amount of emitted light according to the pattern control conditions of each region.

플라스틱광섬유(plastic optical fiber, POF)에 가공된 패턴이 하나의 픽셀처럼 발광할 수 있도록 클래딩에 패턴을 가공하고 도광판 (light guide plate, LGP) 외곽을 둘러싸는 형태로 플라스틱광섬유를 LED 광원에 결합한 광원장치를 설계하였다. 플라스틱광섬유 내부에 28개의 검출기를 설치하고 광원으로부터 내부에 방출되는 출력분포를 분석하기 위해 전산모사한 결과 세 번의 구부러진 경로를 통해서도 끝 단까지 26797.9 Lux의 광량이 전달되어 광원장치로써의 가능성을 보였다. 또한 도광판을 가공하여 LED를 삽입하거나 한쪽 측면에만 배치하는 기존의 방식에 비해 훨씬 균일한 광을 제공하게 되며, 광효율을 향상시키기 위해 광원부에 가까운 패턴을 줄이고 영역별 패턴 제어 조건에 따라 출사되는 광량을 조절하면 원하는 조도(illuminance)분포를 얻을 수 있음을 확인하였다.
