Investigation of College Students' Understanding of Physical Concepts in Force and Motion

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to measure the comprehension of physics concepts by the learner and to design effective teaching programs considering the learning level. In order to do this, we surveyed college freshmen and investigated their understanding of the physics concepts of force and motion. A questionnaire was made and addressed ideas from Newtonian concept of force and motion to general alternative concepts and was used to confirm the general tendencies of physics concepts held by learners. The level of understanding of physics concepts was analyzed based on background variables, such as high-school course category, physics subject completion, and taking of the college entrance exam. The analysis showed great differences in understanding between factors such as action / reaction and causes of change in motion. The results of this study can be applied to the instructional design of university physics classes to improve the learner's academic achievement.

본 연구의 목적은 학습자가 가지고 있는 물리 개념에 대한 이해도를 측정하여 학습수준을 고려한 효과적인 수업설계를 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 대학 신입생을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 고등학생들의 힘과 운동에 대한 물리 개념의 이해도를 조사하였다. 설문지는 힘과 운동에 대한 뉴턴 개념과 일반적인 대안 개념들이 포함된 선택지들로 구성되어 있어 학습자가 가지고 있는 물리 개념의 일반적인 경향을 확인할 수 있었다. 물리 개념에 대한 이해도 분석은 고교 이수계열, 고교 과학 교과목 이수여부 등으로 구분하여 항목별로 이해 정도를 살펴보았다. 분석결과 작용/반작용, 운동의 변화 원인 등의 요인에서 이해도 차이가 큰 것으로 조사되었다. 본 연구결과는 학습자의 학업성취도를 높이기 위해 대학교육과정에서의 물리 교과목 수업설계 시 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
