A Study on the Perception of the Gifted Students About the Aesthetic Features of Physics Experiments

Aesthetic criteria have played important roles in scientific achievements throughout the history of physics. Moreover, taking into account the beautiful aspects in science is helpful for understanding physical concepts and ideas. Thus, this study aimed at examining the perceptions of gifted students about the aesthetic features of physics experiments. The researchers dealt with 99 students enrolled in a class involving physics experiments at a gifted science high school in a metropolitan area. The students were asked to complete an open-ended questionnaire about their perceptions of the aesthetics of physics experiments. The results show that most students regarded physics experiments as beautiful and that their perceptions about the aesthetic features of the experiments could be grouped into four categories. Specifically, they were aware of the beauty when the experiments showed the theory to be consistent with the deserved phenomenon, when experiments reveal nature; when experimental methods were creative or simple and when experiments were useful. They thought that Millikan's oil drop experiment, the measurement of specific charge experiment, and the interference and diffraction experiment were the most beautiful experiments during the course.

최근 심미적 관점에서 과학 및 과학교육을 고찰해 보기 위한 여러 시도가 있었으며, 이러한 관점은 기존의 관점에서는 파악하지 못했던 과학 및 과학교육의 새로운 모습을 볼 수 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구에서는 과학 영재학생들이 인식하는 물리 실험의 미적 특성을 탐색하기 위한 목적으로 수도권 소재 과학영재학교 2학년 학생들 99명을 연구 참여자로 하여 연구를 진행했다. 구체적으로 학생들이 1년간 실시한 일반물리학 실험 내용 중 본인이 생각하는 아름다운 실험은 무엇인지, 아름다운 실험의 기준은 무엇인지 알아보았다. 동시에 학생들이 생각하는 가장 인상적인 실험은 무엇인지도 함께 조사하였다. 연구 결과 학생들은 밀리컨의 기름방울 실험과 비전하 측정 실험, 간섭과 회절 실험이 아름답다고 생각했다. 또한 영재학생들은 실험을 통해 이론과 현상이 일치한다고 느낄 때, 자연의 모습이 드러날 때, 실험 방법이 창의적이고 단순할 때, 유용성이 높은 실험을 할 때 실험이 아름답다고 생각했다.
