We investigated the rolling motion of a rigid body by using a smartphone application to verify the feasibility of using the smartphone as an alternative to the traditional experimental instruments employed in schools. Rolling motion is a combination of translational and rotational motions. This study assessed whether physical quantities, such as position, velocity, and acceleration, could be analyzed by using a smartphone to collect data on such parameters. The experiments on the rolling motion of a cylindrically shaped wheel were carried out using a smartphone application called Sparkvue. The results are discussed from the perspective of the viability of using a smartphone as an alternative to the usual experimental tools.
