Magnetic Properties of a PbWO$_4$:Ce$^{3+}$ Single Crystal Doped with Ce$^{3+}$ ion

Temperature dependences of the $g$ value and the linewidth for cerium (Ce$^{3+}$) ions in PbWO$_4$:Ce$^{3+}$ single crystals have been investigated by means of an X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer. No change in the $g$ value of the Ce$^{3+}$ impurity ion could be detect within the experimental accuracy in the temperature range from 4 K $\sim$ to 65 K. The linewidth of the Ce$^{3+}$ resonance spectrition increases with increasing temperature due to the interaction of the Ce$^{3+}$ electron spins with the acoustic phonons in the PbWO$_4$ crystal. The magnetic moments of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions in PbWO$_4$:Ce$^{3+}$ single crystals were obtained as a function of the magnetic strength $H$ by means of a magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). The magnetic susceptibilities of the PbWO$_4$:Ce$^{3+}$ crystal at 4.25 K and 5 K are $\chi$$_{ce}$ = 1.62$\times$10$^{-5}$ emu/cm$^3$Oe and $\chi$$_{ce}$ = 1.39$\times$10$^{-5}$ emu/cm$^3$Oe, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ at $H$ = 50 kOe of the cerium ions in PbWO$_4$:Ce$^{3+}$ single crystals was also obtained within the temperature range from 4.25 K to 300 K, and was found to obey the Curie law, which shows the temperature dependence of $\chi$$_{ce}$ as ($\propto$$T$$^{-1}$).
